In working through my
action research project I have come to have a deeper understanding of the
number of things that can impact us in education that we cannot completely
control. It is not just the decisions
and philosophies of our campus that affects our school, but also those of the
district, the community, the state government and the federal government. Many of these entities we have limited
control over. As educators we must put
aside what we cannot change and find out how we are going to meet the needs of
each of our students regardless of the barriers put in our way.
As I have worked on my
action research project I have had to really look at what I can control and
what I can’t to guide my focus. This has
led me to focus on awareness of CTE programs.
We have been working to do this by making presentations to 8th
graders and their parents, going over CTE course sequences in all of our CTE
programs with our current students, publicizing courses through course
showcases, and making a presentation to the school board.
My next step is to begin
looking at enrollment data after registration for the fall has concluded. I am excited to see if we really had any
impact on CTE enrollment and in what areas did we have the most impact. This project has helped me to discover many
other areas that we need to work to improve and am now making plans on how we
can do even better next fall.
